Carter D. Broyles, age 90, passed away at home on November 10, 2014, with his loving family by his side. He was born November 1, 1924 in Eckman, West Virginia to William Allen, Sr. and Martha Broyles who preceded him in death along with his brothers, Allen and Bert Broyles. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Pat Broyles; daughter, Suzi Judd and husband Rick; and son, Stephen Carter Broyles and wife Pamela; grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica, and Erica Judd and Brandon Hunter. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Frances Crabbe and Carolyn Marshall; sisters-in-law, Betty Broyles, Virginia Ann Broyles, Jean Pettingell, Vicki Ridges; brother-in-law, Joe Ridges; and his loving numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
Carter received his B.S. from the University of Chattanooga in 1948, followed by his Ph.D in Nuclear Physics at Vanderbilt University in 1952. He honorably served in the U.S. Army, 42nd Rainbow Division during WWII from 1943-1946 where he was awarded the Purple Heart.
After 37 years of distinguished service at Sandia National Laboratories, Carter retired in 1989. During this time he was recognized by many awards and achievements including: American Men of Science, Atomic Energy Commission fellow, American Physical Society fellow, member of the American Association of Physics Teachers and Sigma Xi. Carter received the Defense Nuclear Agency’s Meritorious Service award in 1989.
He will be remembered for his love of family, beautiful home surrounded by God’s green beauties, hummingbirds, roses, and his passion for tinkering.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 17, 2014, 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montaño Road NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Should friends desire, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Michael and All Angels Memorial Fund or the charity of your choice, in lieu of flowers.
