Jeffrey “Jeff” Leigh Dobbs (71) was born February 12, 1953, in Long Beach, California and entered into eternal rest July 29, 2024, in Albuquerque, New Mexico after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Flora Theresa Hetzel of Grand Haven, Michigan and Ishmael Landon “Lee” Dobbs of Olive, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife of 30+ years Carolyn Marie (Briggs), his brothers Richard Carl Dobbs (Catherine Tupper) in Albuquerque and David Morgan Dobbs in Alaska. His brother-in-law Joel Frederick Briggs (Sandy) in Flagstaff and his many nieces and nephews.
Jeff graduated from Palm Spring High School in 1972 and attended College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California where he obtained his associate’s degree. Jeff moved to Albuquerque in 1977. He stopped to visit his brother Richard who was stationed at Kirtland Airforce Base on his travels to see the Atlantic ocean and never left. Finally getting to see the Atlantic ocean in 1992. Jeff worked as a bar tender at several places including the Elks Club. At the Elks Club he met O.M. Whitmon who owned an accounting and tax service. In 1979 Jeff went to work for O.M. and in 1986 bought the business. Jeff owned Whitmon Bookkeeping and Tax Service until 2021. Jeff became an Enrolled Agent (EA) licensed to practice before the Internal Revenue Service in 2003.
Jeff became a Mason in 1979 when he joined Zia Daylight Lodge #77. He also joined New Mexico Scottish Rite, Valley of Santa Fe and Ballut Abyad Shrine in 1980. Jeff served as Worshipful Master of Zia Daylight in 1992 and he served as Worshipful Master of the New Mexico Lodge of Research in 1998. He served as Chief Engineer of the Loco Patrol Unit of the Shrine in 1987. He served as Treasurer, Oriental Guide and High Priest and Prophet for Ballut Abyad Shrine. He served as Wise Master of Azlan Chapter Rose Croix in 2013, Commander of Kadosh in 2017 and Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection in 2019 for the Scottish Rite Valley of Santa Fe and he was coroneted an Inspector General Honorary, 33° on September 8, 2017.
Jeff was also a member of the Royal Order of Jesters and Order of the Quetzalcoatl “Q” for over 25 years. He was honored with his 25-year pin from both organizations. He was also a member of York Rite Masons in New Mexico. Jeff joined Jessamine Chapter #45 Order of the Eastern Star in 1996.
Jeff and Carolyn were married in May of 1994 in Las Vegas, Nevada while attending the Western Shrine Association annual conference. They traveled extensively over the years, visiting many states and countries.
The family would like to thank High Desert Hospice and Dr. Rosemary DeCosta and her team at Enchanted Living of New Mexico for the excellent care they provided for Jeff. Jeff was cremated and his ashes will be interned in Mannford, Oklahoma with his father and grandparents.
