Leona Reck

Leona Kulcsar Reck, age 95, passed away peacefully on the third of March, 2021. She was born in Chicago on September 29, 1925, moved to Albuquerque in the late 1940s, and lived for 70 years in her beautiful home in Los Ranchos. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Reck (“my Jim”), parents Elizabeth and Frank Kulcsar; sisters Betty (Elizabeth) Reich, Irene Glazer, Pat Reck, and Judy Kulcsar; and nephew James Frank Reck.

Leona is survived by two daughters: Karen Reck (husband Paul Akmajian), and Terri Reck (husband Fred Sturm); four grandchildren: Franz Sturm (wife Joy), Lora Sturm (husband Michael Selvaag), Adrianne Akmajian (husband John Scordino), and Kira Akmajian (husband Nick Bennett); great-grandchildren: Kaya and Lilliana Scordino, and Ezry Sturm; niece Linda Nollen, her daughter Crystalyn Stack (husband Greg) and their children Collin and Brielle Stack; nephews: Kenneth Glazer, Robert Reich, and Kevin Quinlan; niece: Sandra Dosick; and many other dear family members and friends. “I loved you all.”

Leona was beloved by her many friends and neighbors, and was particularly fond of children, whom she called her precious angels. In her early years in New Mexico, she worked as a bookkeeper in the Sunshine Building in downtown Albuquerque. She was an avid reader, proud of her Hungarian heritage, and enjoyed camping with her husband, Jim. Leona was an enthusiastic cook, taking gourmet cooking classes, watching cooking shows, collecting cookbooks, and cooking elaborate meals for family gatherings. All her life she was a volunteer. As an active member of her church, St. Luke Lutheran, she served on numerous committees and for many years chaired the preparation of food for memorial services and other occasions.
