Leopoldo Griego
Leo Griego passed away February 13, 2021 at the age of 96. He was born April 29, 1924 in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. He is preceded in death by his wife Evangeline Griego, son Ronald Ray Griego, daughter Sharon Griego Housel, brother Quirino Griego, sisters Lukie Quintana and Gloria Klaub, great-granddaughter Taygen Aurora Griego.
Leo is survived by his grandsons Matthew Griego and Brandon (Virginia) Griego, brother Jake Griego, sisters Toni Lovato and Liza Candelaria, great-grandchildren Kaitlynn, Collin, Lilly, Copelin, Kolte and Sky. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Leo was born and raised in his beloved North Valley of Albuquerque and lived the majority of his life there. At the age of 16 he joined the CC Camp (a great depression program). When WWII broke out Leo joined the Marines. Assigned to the 1st Marine Division – A1-5 he was trained as a sharpshooter and he was then deployed to the Pacific Theatre. He was wounded in the battle for the Island of Peleliu. Leo served his country honorably and proudly.
Thru out his life Leo continued to serve his community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered for years at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Him and his very dear friend Danny Sandoval volunteered at the St. Felix’s Pantry doing what Leo called “the bread run”.
Leo was a shining light in his entire family’s life, always caring and calling and checking up on us. We will miss him every day.

Services will be limited due to Covid-19. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday March 1, 2021 at the Church of the Nativity of The Blessed Mary at 9am. Seating is limited to 45 people. The service will be live streamed on Nativity’s website www.n-bvm.org and also broadcast on FM Radio 88.1 in the church parking lot. If you are planning on attending at the church, you must arrive by 8:40am – temperatures will be checked. Burial will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to your favorite Veteran’s charity.
